The interaction of thyroid hormones (THs) and proteins plays an important role in cancer, and the present study investigated the hepatic protein expression of transthyretin (TTR), thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), thyroid hormone receptor-β (THRβ), and iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO). The aim was to identify patterns of thyroid hormone protein expression and to assess correlations with clinical factors. Primary liver cancer (PLC) and paired non-cancerous hepatic tissues were obtained from 11 patients. Protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry and western blot. Association with clinical factors was tested by multiple regression analysis. The PLC tissues showed a decrease in TTR and TBG, and an increase in THRβ. DIO2 protein expression was increased, whereas DIO1 was decreased. No association was detected between protein levels and tumor stage, grade, size, or AFP. There was a correlation between DIO1 protein expression and TBG levels in PLC (r = -0.7, P = 0.0048). A lower protein level of TBG in PLC tissue is suggestive of increased intracellular TH action in tumor cells.Two Ways You Can #BeLikeALittleGirl
