Kuruvi is a 2006 Indian Tamil action masala film directed by S. Shankar and produced by AVM Productions. The film stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role, who is also credited as its writer, director and music composer. It was simultaneously made in Telugu as Pokiri starring Mahesh Babu and Kangana Ranaut. It was remade into Hindi as Race starring Anil Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, which released on 18 May 2008 . It is also the first Tamil film to be dubbed into Japanese for release in Japan by Columbia Pictures Industries Inc. The movie starts with the elimination of the entire gang of Haridas (Prakash Raj) except Raghavan (Lakshmi Rai). Kuruvai (Kamal Haasan) is a happy go lucky guy whose main ambition in life is to make his own style. He was brought up in an orphanage along with his friend Thirumalai aka Thiru (Vivek) by Raghavan. Kuruvai falls in love with his uncle's daughter Devi (Manisha Koirala), who is the apple of her uncle's eyes. However, it turns out that he has been double crossed by her uncle, who is actually a smuggler. Kuruvai's life changes when he comes to know that he is the son of Haridas, whom he had once admired. He decides to take revenge on the people who are responsible for his father's death. One day Kuruvai meets Shankar (Siddharth), an old friend of his father, who was also a member of Haridas' gang, but had quit to become a police officer. He advises Kuruvai against getting involved in smuggling. But Kuruvai is adamant and goes on with his plans. The rest of the plot deals with how he takes revenge, copes with problems and wins back his love by proving himself as a true man. The music was composed by Vijay Antony. It was dubbed into Telugu as Pokiri.The film was a major box office hit at the box-office. It grossed about , making it the 14th highest-grossing Tamil film at the time. It also became one of Kamal Haasan's most acclaimed movies in his career. It has won 5 awards including the "Best Actor" for Kamal Haasan, "Best Director" for S Shankar, "Best Film" for AVM Productions and "Best Music Director" for Vijay Antony. The song "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan" is reused in the film "Dilwale". Kamal Haasan was nominated for "Best Actor" at 50th Filmfare Awards South. Prabhu Deva won the "Best Playback Singer (Male)" award for the song "Naanum Rowdy Dhaan", while Anuradha Sriram won the "Best Female Playback Singer" award for the same.
