Metals is a concept album about an unnamed Los Angeles-based music producer, who, according to Feist, is capable of creating the perfect pop song, but "instead of doing the thing that makes him happy, he creates phony metal songs". The producer is portrayed in the album as being vain, materialistic, arrogant and a control freak. The producer also creates an entirely fictional metal subgenre called "snuff metal" and uses it to secure more contracts and to manipulate women. The album's title, track-list and lyrics are all references to the "fake metal" genre. The album features music by artist and former collaborator Kirin J. Callinan, rapper Ms. Patinkin, rock band Phantom Planet, and contributions by Scott McCaughey of the band Minus 5 and Michael G. Wroblewski, from the band Bitch Magnet. Callinan was also credited for producing the songs.
Metals includes 9 original songs, 1 cover song, 1 music video, and 2 hidden tracks. Four of the original songs—"Gold", "Tarantula", "Black & White" and "Give It Away"—are also included in Feist's 2010 album The Reminder. "Gold" was released as a single, and it was the last song to be recorded for the album. The "Hidden Track" song is "Gold (Reprise)".
